Regional Wage Differences and Agglomeration Externalities: Micro Evidence from Thai Manufacturing Workers

چکیده

The large and persistent wage gap between the Bangkok Metropolitan Region its peripheries remains a major concern for policymakers civil society. Theoretically, these regional disparities exist due to differences in workforce skills local characteristics of regions. This study empirically investigates sources spatial disparity Thailand using data sets from Labor Force Survey, Industrial Census, geospatial data, satellite imagery years 2007, 2012, 2017. two-stage estimation method was applied, soil clay content used as instrumental variable correcting endogeneity bias omission. results show that workers’ education experience affect differential. Other than individual skills, workers also benefited agglomeration externalities cities. Specifically, effect on wages found be statistically significant. To overcome paradox low urbanization rate high urban primacy Thailand, this suggests establishment multiple cities create externalities.

Upstreamness, Exports, and Wage Inequality: Evidence from Chinese Manufacturing Data

[Abstract] In this paper we investigate within-firm wage inequality across heterogeneous industries that hold different positions in the domestic value chain, and across heterogeneous firms that have different exposure to trade. We find that the wage inequality problem is more severe in upstream industries than in downstream ones, and among firms with greater exposure to trade (i.e., larger exp...

Structural change and wage inequality: Evidence from German micro data

This paper measures the impact of sectoral composition, international trade and technological progress on the rising wage gap in Germany. I find a positive effect of the increasing importance of services on the rising wage gap in Germany that is comparable to the effects of international trade and technological change. To quantify the causal relationship between the structural change of the Ger...

Congestion Tolling with Agglomeration Externalities*

Consider an urban economy with two types of externalities, negative traffic congestion externalities and positive agglomeration externalities deriving from non-market interaction. Suppose that urban travel can be tolled, that non-market interaction cannot be subsidized, and that non-market interaction is stimulated by a reduction in travel costs. Then the optimal toll is below the congestion ex...

Changes in Agglomeration Economies and Linkage Externalities for Japanese Urban Manufacturing Industries: 1990 and 2000

Urban agglomeration economies are usually divided into two categories: urbanization economies and localization economies. In the 1970s and 1980s, a number of attempts were made to estimate urbanization economies and/or localization economies directly in the production function. Since the work by Glaeser et al. in 1992, however, historical effects on agglomeration called dynamic externalities in...
